Talk show host Dennis Miller said, "I don't dig polo. It's like miniature golf meets the Kentucky Derby."

Nothing illustrates the superficiality of our times better than the enthusiasm for electric cars, because they are supposed to greatly reduce air pollution. But the electricity that ultimately powers these cars has to be generated somewhere -- and nearly half the electricity generated in this country is generated by burning coal.

The 2012 Republican primaries may be a rerun of the 2008 primaries, where the various conservative candidates split the conservative vote so many ways that the candidate of the mushy middle got the nomination -- and then lost the election.

Because morality does not always prevail, by any means, too many of the intelligentsia act as if it has no effect. But, even in Nazi Germany, thousands of Germans hid Jews during the war, at the risk of their own lives, because it was the right thing to do.

In recent times, Christmas has brought not only holiday cheer but also attacks on the very word "Christmas," chasing it from the vocabulary of institutions and even from most "holiday cards." Like many other social crusades, this one is based on a lie -- namely that the Constitution puts a wall of separation between church and state. It also shows how easily intimidated we are by strident zealots.

If you don't like growing older, don't worry about it. You may not be growing older much longer.

What do you call it when someone steals someone else's money secretly? Theft. What do you call it when someone takes someone else's money openly by force? Robbery. What do you call it when a politician takes someone else's money in taxes and gives it to someone who is more likely to vote for him? Social Justice.

When an organization has more of its decisions made by committees, that gives more influence to those who have more time available to attend committee meetings and to drag out each meeting longer. In other words, it reduces the influence of those who have work to do, and are doing it, while making those who are less productive more influential.

Anyone who studies the history of ideas should notice how much more often people on the political left, more so than others, denigrate and demonize those who disagree with them -- instead of answering their arguments.

The wisest and most knowledgeable human being on the planet is utterly incompetent to make even 10 percent of the consequential decisions that have to be made in a modern nation. Yet all sorts of people want to decide how much money other people can make or keep, and to micro-manage how other people live their lives.

The real egalitarians are not the people who want to redistribute wealth to the poor, but those who want to extend to the poor the ability to create their own wealth, to lift themselves up, instead of trying to tear others down. Earning respect, including self-respect, is better than being a parasite.

Of all the arguments for giving amnesty to illegal immigrants, the most foolish is the argument that we can't find and expel all of them. There is not a law on the books that someone has not violated, including laws against murder, and we certainly have not found and prosecuted all the violators -- whether murderers or traffic law violators. But do we then legalize all the illegalities we haven't been able to detect and prosecute?

In the 1920s, Congressman Thomas S. Adams referred to "the ease with which the income tax may be legally avoided" but also said some Congressmen "so fervently believe that the rich ought to pay 40 or 50 per cent of their incomes" in taxes that they would rather make this a law, even if the government would get more revenue from a lower tax rate that people actually pay. Some also prefer class warfare politics that brings in votes, if not revenue.

Can you imagine a man who had never run any kind of organization, large or small, taking it upon himself to fundamentally change all kinds of organizations in a huge and complex economy? Yet that is what Barack Obama did when he said, "We are going to change the United States of America!" This was not "The Audacity of Hope." It was the audacity of hype.

Members of New York’s jazz community including composer Darcy James Argue and trumpeters David Weiss and Marcus Printup are passing along word that the great saxophonist/composer/bandleader Sam Rivers died yesterday.

Rivers, who was 88 and lived near Orlando, Florida, made music with great stylistic breadth, informed by a wealth of inspirations. He was a striking figure in the story of free jazz, but he was also thoroughly steeped in the rigours of bebop. Rivers was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet in the 1960s before Wayne Shorter joined the group, and he appears on the 1964 album Miles in Tokyo. Rivers subsequently appeared on some bracing Blue Note recordings including the classic under his own leadership Fuchsia Swing Song, Tony Williams’ Spring and Life Time, Larry Young’s Into Somethin‘ and Bobby Hutcherson’s Dialogue.

In a stunning move that has civil libertarians stuttering with disbelief, the U.S. Senate has just passed a bill that effectively ends the Bill of Rights in America.

This bill, passed late last night in a 93-7 vote, declares the entire USA to be a "battleground" upon which U.S. military forces can operate with impunity, overriding Posse Comitatus and granting the military the unchecked power to arrest, detain, interrogate and even assassinate U.S. citizens with impunity.

It's being called the most traitorous act ever witnessed in the Senate, and the language of the bill is cleverly designed to make you think it doesn't apply to Americans, but toward the end of the bill it essentially says it can apply to Americans "if we want it to."

Even WIRED magazine was outraged at this bill, reporting:

...the detention mandate to use indefinite military detention in terrorism cases isn’t limited to foreigners. It’s confusing, because two different sections of the bill seem to contradict each other, but in the judgment of the University of Texas’ Robert Chesney — a nonpartisan authority on military detention —"U.S. citizens are included in the grant of detention authority.”

Seek The Partner(s) You Need. It is very important to know what you can do and what you can’t do and have the right partners on your founding team.

Be Persistent. You will speak to hundreds of people and many of them will turn you down—at first. Investors often say no when they mean"not right now," and they tend to invest in women and companies who are consistent and persistent.

It’s Not Personal. Especially important for women entrepreneurs to remember. It’s a business proposition and even though it may be"your baby,” it’s not personal. What data is there for you to mine to assure success the next time?

Build Relationships. You are creating a network of people who will introduce you to others, so take mentors wherever you get them. Investors tend to look for lines rather than dots. It’s about more than money.

Really Sell Your Vision. It’s great to know the business. But if you can convey that moment when the light went on for you, your potential investor will be more likely to see what you see. The investors we talk to tell us that never gets old. Passion sells and that’s great news for women entrepreneurs.

Understand Your Core Risk Also know how you are going to address it. It’s critical to sell your vision, and know what you will do about your challenges.

Really Listen. Get a dialogue going. Come in as ready to listen as you are to pitch.

Have A Clear Value Proposition. Know your business inside and out, and be prepared for your number to be cut in half. Make your ask strategic and don’t be overly modest about what you need and what you will do.

Have a Plan B! Nothing reduces anxiety like knowing that you have multiple options. Think through your worst- case scenario and be prepared to act on it if you need to.

Leverage Your Strengths. It’s important to remember that getting funding is as much an art as a science. You really need to use your intuition and integrity to discern the best decision for you and your company.

What Boston showed us that day was that if you can do the above, funding will follow. It just takes a few committed investors to turn an entire community into a great place for inspired women to grow businesses. And that’s the starting point for a blueprint of successful entrepreneurial cities for women.

This morning opened with this light. I kid you not. It looked like this. I ran up the road in my pajamas to catch it and five minutes later it was gone. The sun slid under a cloud, and when it re-emerged an hour later, it had that cool, fall crispness to it. No longer like honey on the trees against an unreal blue sky.

That is how the creative moment is. You have to catch it. I have learned that if I don’t follow the impulse in that moment, it is gone. The readiness to go into the studio and move. The readiness to write. If I let myself be distracted by too many things, like checking my Mailchimp account, or looking at email (other people’s work), the impulse is like that light. Gone, or too cool to cook with.

This morning I caught the light, but not the writing. There actually is a reason. Outside, the truck is chipping all the branches from my shattered trees. The noise is deafening and seeing what remains of the beautiful cherry, the pear trees and the lilac is painful to see. I wrote about that in The Journal two weeks ago. The Journal is my ragged memoir, unfolding in fragments, every week.

Experienced meditators seem to be able switch off areas of the brain associated with daydreaming as well as psychiatric disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, according to a new brain imaging study by Yale researchers.

Meditation's ability to help people stay focused on the moment has been associated with increased happiness levels, said Judson A. Brewer, assistant professor of psychiatry and lead author of the study published the week of Nov. 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Understanding how meditation works will aid investigation into a host of diseases, he said.

"Meditation has been shown to help in variety of health problems, such as helping people quit smoking, cope with cancer, and even prevent psoriasis," Brewer said.

The Yale team conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging scans on both experienced and novice meditators as they practiced three different meditation techniques.

They found that experienced meditators had decreased activity in areas of the brain called the default mode network, which has been implicated in lapses of attention and disorders such as anxiety, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and even the buildup of beta amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's disease. The decrease in activity in this network, consisting of the medial prefrontal and posterior cingulate cortex, was seen in experienced meditators regardless of the type of meditation they were doing.

The scans also showed that when the default mode network was active, brain regions associated with self-monitoring and cognitive control were co-activated in experienced meditators but not novices. This may indicate that meditators are constantly monitoring and suppressing the emergence of "me" thoughts, or mind-wandering. In pathological forms, these states are associated with diseases such as autism and schizophrenia.

The meditators did this both during meditation, and also when just resting — not being told to do anything in particular. This may indicate that meditators have developed a "new" default mode in which there is more present-centered awareness, and less "self"-centered, say the researchers.

"Meditation's ability to help people stay in the moment has been part of philosophical and contemplative practices for thousands of years," Brewer said. "Conversely, the hallmarks of many forms of mental illness is a preoccupation with one's own thoughts, a condition meditation seems to affect. This gives us some nice cues as to the neural mechanisms of how it might be working clinically."

This is not just a story about a horse. It is about the commute from what we know to what we do not know. What we fear.

For a long time this picture shows the only way that I could touch Nelson on his left side. He would not let anyone stand on his that side. That was where he had been freeze-branded by the BLM after his capture. Who knows what else had happened there. It is like the dark side of the moon – the part we can’t see. Unexplored, alien.

Over time, I got him to let me move to that side. Usually by walking around his tail and walking calmly toward his head. But every time I would do it, he was nervous. As if it were the first time, and someone showing up on that side was a nasty surprise.

Today was that way. I haven’t seen Nelson for a couple weeks, and when I walked around and stood on his left and went to touch him on that side, his skin jumped, and he spooked off. Like a boogeyman had popped out of the ground there. I did it again, and he was still nervous, but let me touch him. I clicked and gave him a treat (he is moderately Clicker Trained).

As I went to touch him again, a curious thing happened. I felt myself drop into what felt like a warm lake of calm, as if I had stepped into my avatar, who possessed transformational powers. "What’s this?” I thought. Nelson dropped his head, and relaxed. Immediately.

Because their vision is not binocular in the way that ours is, horses experience the two sides of their bodies differently. When you introduce something on one side, you have to do the same thing on the other side, because that side has not processed the information.

I often imagine that I am like Nelson in this way. One side that is pretty mellow and can handle what comes along. The other side that is spooky and weird. Not exactly Jekyll and Hyde, but disconcerting to those who live with me nonetheless. It is almost like falling out of being a predator and into being prey. Back and forth. Actually, I think most of us do this all the time. "I’m safe.” "I’m going to die.” Back and forth.

After my calm warm lake moment I could touch him all over. We were both breathing. I felt these huge blooms of love for him. That is, in fact, the glue – the tether – the thing that smooths the journey from one side of the moon to the other.

The Phenomenal Lizz Wright
Duke Performances presented The Phenomenal Lizz Wright, Friday, October 7, 2011, and I was fortunately enough to be present. We were astounded, Lizz and her band captivated and entertained us for a solid hour and a half. Lizz born in Georgia but now lives outside Asheville, North Carolina has a impeccable voice, a beautiful smile and a mesmerizing stage presence.

I cannot put Lizz in any one category of music, her music transcends gospel, jazz, blues, classics and she shared it all with us. Gospel classics, Amazing Grace, that had everyone in Reynolds Theater standing, along with other songs from her new album, Fellowship. She then treated us to a song by Etta James, A Lover is Forever; Other songs: Stop, My Heart, Hit the Ground, Easy Rider, Hey Mann and many others. She and band received well deserved ovation after ovation. This young woman is awesome!

Along with Lizz Wright, her band consisted of great musicians – Marvin Sewell, Guitar – Robin Macatangay, Guitar – Kenneth Banks, Keys – Brannen Temple, Drums (Brannen is a magician, the man had more tricks than i’ve seen for a drummer, rattlers, sticks, tambourine, his knee; if it moved he could make a beat.)

I must say thank you to DukePerformances.Org for bringing such a talented songstress to Reynolds Theater, Duke Campus, Durham, NC.

I am quite speechless right now. Justin Case and I have spent all day together with Trevor Eckhart (you may remember him as TrevE of DamageControl and Virus ROMs) looking into Trev's findings deep inside HTC's latest software installed on such phones as EVO 3D, EVO 4G, Thunderbolt, and others.

These results are not pretty. In fact, they expose such ridiculously frivolous doings, which HTC has no one else to blame but itself, that the data-leaking Skype vulnerability Justin found earlier this year pales in comparison. Without further ado, let me break things down.
The Vulnerability

In recent updates to some of its devices, HTC introduces a suite of logging tools that collected information. Lots of information. LOTS. Whatever the reason was, whether for better understanding problems on users' devices, easier remote analysis, corporate evilness - it doesn't matter. If you, as a company, plant these information collectors on a device, you better be DAMN sure the information they collect is secured and only available to privileged services or the user, after opting in.

That is not the case. What Trevor found is only the tip of the iceberg - we are all still digging deeper - but currently any app on affected devices that requests a single android.permission.INTERNET (which is normal for any app that connects to the web or shows ads) can get its hands on:

the list of user accounts, including email addresses and sync status for each
last known network and GPS locations and a limited previous history of locations
phone numbers from the phone log
SMS data, including phone numbers and encoded text (not sure yet if it's possible to decode it, but very likely)
system logs (both kernel/dmesg and app/logcat), which includes everything your running apps do and is likely to include email addresses, phone numbers, and other private info

Normally, applications get access to only what is allowed by the permissions they request, so when you install a simple, innocent-looking new game from the Market that only asks for the INTERNET permission (to submit scores online, for example), you don't expect it to read your phone log or list of emails.

But that's not all. After looking at the huge amount of data (the log file was 3.5MB on my EVO 3D) that is vulnerable to apps exploiting this vulnerability all day, I found the following is also exposed (granted, some of which may be already available to any app via the Android APIs):

active notifications in the notification bar, including notification text
build number, bootloader version, radio version, kernel version
network info, including IP addresses
full memory info
CPU info
file system info and free space on each partition
running processes
current snapshot/stacktrace of not only every running process but every running thread
list of installed apps, including permissions used, user ids, versions, and more
system properties/variables
currently active broadcast listeners and history of past broadcasts received
currently active content providers
battery info and status, including charging/wake lock history
and more

Let me put it another way. By using only the INTERNET permission, any app can also gain at least the following:

ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION Allows an application to access coarse (e.g., Cell-ID, WiFi) location
ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION Allows an application to access fine (e.g., GPS) location
ACCESS_LOCATION_EXTRA_COMMANDS Allows an application to access extra location provider commands
ACCESS_WIFI_STATE Allows applications to access information about Wi-Fi networks
BATTERY_STATS Allows an application to collect battery statistics
DUMP Allows an application to retrieve state dump information from system services.
GET_ACCOUNTS Allows access to the list of accounts in the Accounts Service
GET_PACKAGE_SIZE Allows an application to find out the space used by any package.
GET_TASKS Allows an application to get information about the currently or recently running tasks: a thumbnail representation of the tasks, what activities are running in it, etc.
READ_LOGS Allows an application to read the low-level system log files.
READ_SYNC_SETTINGS Allows applications to read the sync settings
READ_SYNC_STATS Allows applications to read the sync stats

Theoretically, it may be possible to clone a device using only a small subset of the information leaked here.

I'd like to reiterate that the only reason the data is leaking left and right is because HTC set their snooping environment up this way. It's like leaving your keys under the mat and expecting nobody who finds them to unlock the door. For a more technical explanation, see the section below.

Additionally, and the implications of this could end up being insignificant, yet still very suspicious, HTC also decided to add an app called androidvncserver.apk to their Android OS installations. If you're not familiar with the definition of VNC, it is basically a remote access server. On the EVO 3D, it was present from the start and updated in the latest OTA. The app doesn't get started by default, but who knows what and who can trigger it and potentially get access to your phone remotely? I'm sure we'll know soon enough - HTC, care to tell us what it's doing here?
Technical Details

In addition to Carrier IQ (CIQ) that was planted by HTC/Sprint and prompted all kinds of questions a while ago, HTC also included another app called HtcLoggers.apk. This app is capable of collecting all kinds of data, as I mentioned above, and then... provide it to anyone who asks for it by opening a local port. Yup, not just HTC, but anyone who connects to it, which happens to be any app with the INTERNET permission. Ironically, because a given app has the INTERNET permission, it can also send all the data off to a remote server, killing 2 birds with one stone permission.

In fact, HtcLogger has a whole interface which accepts a variety of commands (such as the handy :help: that shows all available commands). Oh yeah - and no login/password are required to access said interface.

Furthermore, it's worth noting that HtcLogger tries to use root to dump even more data, etc . . .

It’s 2011, but most doctor’s offices are still stuck in the 1990s when it comes to patient-facing technology. The receptionist probably has a computer to manage appointments, but typically you still sign in on paper, fill out forms on a clipboard, and your doctor relies on a loosely-bound sheaf of papers to check your medical records. Tom Lee is trying to change that from the ground up with One Medical Group, the venture-backed primary care practice he founded a few years ago where he is CEO.

On Friday, he closed a $20 million series E, led by Maverick Capital, with Benchmark, Oak Investment, and DAG Ventures participating. The new round brings the total capital raised since 2007 to $46.5 million.

One Medical operates 9 doctor’s offices in San Francisco and New York, and will open 5 more this year, expanding to Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. Patients can schedule appointments online, request prescriptions, get lab results digitally, and see their personal health summary online. Doctors can access medical records electronically (One Medical designed its own electronic medical record with doctors and patients in mind, not administrators). One benefit of having digital medical records is that patients can visit any office since every doctor has access to their records.

New patients can join online, and pay online. It even has its own iPhone app for scheduling appointments. Simple questions which can be addressed via email or the iPhone app are done digitally instead of requiring an in-person visit. And when patients do go in, the offices are bright, airy and modern.

All of this technology, which is a combination of off-the-shelf and proprietary systems, is aimed at reducing administrative costs, and improving the experience for both doctors and patients. Lee contrasts his approach to the physician practice management movement of the 1990s, an investment fad which saw hundreds of doctor’s offices rolled up into larger operating companies. "The PPM movement in the 90s didn’t fundamentally reengineer the workflow of the doctor’s office or improve the experience,” says Lee. PPMs were driven by administrators. One Medical is driven by doctors. Its approach is to"reengineer the doctor’s office to be more patient-centered with less administrative overhead.”

An earthquake sent tremors from the nation’s capital to New York City and New England Tuesday afternoon, the result of what officials said was a 5.9 magnitude earthquake based in Virginia.

Buildings throughout major metropolitan centers in the northeast were evacuated after the quake, and tremors were felt as far north as Concord, N.H., and as far south as Hampstead, N.C., with some limited reports of damage reported near the quake’s epicenter in Virginia.

The streets of downtown Washington filled with thousands of people on Tuesday afternoon as buildings from the capital to the White House were evacuated.

Nick Ashford, who wrote many Motown classics with his wife Valerie Simpson, died Monday.

Ashford & Simpson — you can't think of one without the other — penned and produced almost all of the '60s hits for Motown's Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, including Ain't No Mountain High Enough, You're All I Need to Get By, Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing and Your Precious Love. They also wrote hits for Chuck Jackson, The Shirelles, Maxine Brown and the Fifth Dimension.

Ray Charles' 1966 No. 1 R&B hit Let's Go Get Stoned was their breakthrough record. They would later write and produce Diana Ross' biggest solo hits, including her signature Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand). They also wrote Chaka Khan's I'm Every Woman, which was later recorded by Whitney Houston.

East coast folks, get ready, Irene is headed in our direction. Back up all data. Make copies of your insurance documents and any other personal documents that you deem necessary and put on portable drives that you can take with you. Make sure you have emergency supplies on hand. Water, food (don't forget about your pets) extra clothes, cash, batteries, cash, cleaning supplies, duct tape, tarps, and store in more than one location if possible. Have an emergency exit route planned and a central meeting location for all family members. Establish a communication network with family and friends before the storm hits and test it to make sure it works.
Service your generators now. Be careful where you store extra fuel. For gas grills, check your tanks and make sure you have the needed supplies.

Extra note for phone users: I use my battery backup power supply (500-750 watts) that I usually have connected to my computers. They work great for charging cell phones, iPads, power for small lamps and radios.

We do know that Mozilla has just released Firefox 6, but here we are with Firefox 7 Beta – and this particular version (also, we did cover whispers of Mozilla mulling over whether to do away with version numbers) is said to be the first to implement Memshrink. Just what does Memshrink bring to the table? It will be able to reduce Firefox’s memory usage by get this – nearly 50%. Now that is certainly something worth looking into, and if such low memory usage levels can be achieved even in a beta, imagine what the full version will be able to do.
